Storage tanks are essential for industries like oil and gas, chemical processing, and food production, where bulk liquids are stored. Often insulated to maintain temperature, these tanks require regular maintenance and inspection to ensure structural integrity. However, insulation can conceal the tank’s surface, making it difficult to detect corrosion or wear. To address these challenges, API 653 provides guidelines for inspecting and maintaining aboveground storage tanks, helping to identify and prevent potential risks.

API 653, established by the American Petroleum Institute (API), sets standards for inspecting, repairing, altering, and reconstructing aboveground storage tanks (ASTs). These regulations ensure the safe operation of tanks storing hazardous or temperature-sensitive materials. KB Stainless perform 10 yearly API 653 inspections which are essential for detecting early signs of damage, especially corrosion. Insulated tanks present additional challenges, as their insulation can hide underlying issues.

Key Metrics:

  • 10 year internal inspections of storage tanks. Every ten years, the tank must be taken out of service for an internal inspection. The tank is drained and cleaned, allowing inspectors to thoroughly assess the interior for any cracks, corrosion, or other signs of damage.

  • Conduct repairs and maintenance on the tanks as required.
